IW 30-32 Tottonians II
IW hosted Tottonians II at Wootton Rec, searching for their third successive win. Though forced into a number of changes from their last fixture, they were optimistic that victory could be achieved, though not under-estimating the threat from the visitors.
The game had a promising start, with IW putting good pressure on the visitors. Quick and efficient hands allowed the home side to take an early lead with Biffa man of the match Callum Pudney getting the first of his two tries.
Some varied passages of play resulted not only in Tottonians getting back into the game, but IW losing Tom Marriott to the sin bin, though Pudney’s second score and a Lewis Murray penalty gave the hosts a 17-12 lead at half-time.
Possession went back and forth through the second half, with promising signs of securing victory from both teams, a further Murray penalty plus a Marriott try giving IW a 25-20 lead. However, Totts fought back to score two tries, the second with little more than five minutes remaining. The successful angled conversion left the home team with a difficult job, trailing 32-25 and perhaps feasibly only being able to salvage a draw.
IW worked through their phases and after several penalties deep in the opposition half, a series of quickly taken penalties were converted into a try by Alex Smith. With the score 30-32, the weight of the game rested on the shoulders of Murray to get the draw. Controversially, an early charge was not penalised by the referee, and the kick drifted narrowly wide.
The IW Rangers look to next week, travelling to bottom of the league Southampton, to try and find the winning form they’ve shown in previous weeks.
IW: Elsom, C Browne, D Blackman, L Blackman, Langdon, Murray, Marriott, Blackburn, Hughes, Newnham, Jones, Pudney, Brown, Lynch, A Smith, Webster, Augustus.
